Alumnus of University of Virginia. Married to Martha Ellen Todd of Fredericksburg. Father of Aubin Lee, Vivian Gray; both sons served in Company H, 9th Virginia Cavalry, during the War Between the States.
Prewar he was a farmer, planter, and the leading merchant of Newtown, King & Queen County, VA. There he built and sold in 1853 a (still-standing) brick building to Rev. E. Payson Walton for his Newtown Female Seminary.
Postwar he came to live with his son, Aubin, at the former Judge Francis Taliaferro Brooke Estate, "St. Julien", Spotsylvania County, which Aubin had bought in 1879.

Enlisted in 1861, he was mustered into Purcell Virginia Light Artillery as a Private.
Furnished substitute; discharged 2/18/1862.
The Purcell Light Artillery, completed its organization at Richmond, Virginia, in April, 1861.
