After an illness of scarcely a week's duration, Mr. John E. Chesley, a highly respected citizen of Springvale, died at his home upon Pleasant Street, Wednesday morning, December 30th. Mr. Chesley was born in Somersworth, NH., and at the time of his death was 59 years old. At different times he lived in Shapleigh and Waterboro, but for the last twelve years of his life, his home had been in this village.

He had been the business representative in this vicinity for the Archibald Wheel Co. of Nashua, NH.. In the great revival that swept through this section in 1875 under the preaching of Shaw and Bailey, Mr. Chesley became a Christian and united with the Free Baptist Church. Upon moving to Waterboro with Mrs. Chesley, they united with the Baptist church of that village of which Mr. Chesley was a member up to the time of his death. Mr. Chesley was also a member of the Masonic Order in the Fraternal Lodge at Alfred, ME. Mr. Chesley was a man of upright character and a public spirited citizen. For many years he was a leader in York County Democratic politics. At one time he was postmaster in Waterboro during the administration of President Grover Cleveland.

His death is a distinct loss to the community. Besides his widow Mrs. Susan (Smith) Chesley, Mr. Chesley is survived by three sons, the oldest Albion, the next Burton E., and the youngest Fred. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy a very wide circle of friends and aquaintances.
