Leona M. Ammerman, 91, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Pine Avenue and the Fifth Ward, Altoona, died Tuesday at the manor. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Wolfgang and Louise E. (Beck) Breit. She married Carl S. Ammerman Oct. 4, 1940, in Altoona. He preceded her in death Dec. 5, 1989. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Mahoney and husband, Jim, of Roaring Spring; a son, Carl L. of Flushing, Mich.; five grandchildren: Jim Mahoney and wife, Stacey, of Roaring Spring, Jamie Walters and husband, Scott, of Etters, Denise M. Witucki of Grand Blanc, Mich., Carl J. Ammerman and wife, Beth, of Flushing, Mich., and Debra A. Asbury and husband, Bill, of Flanders, N.J.; 10 great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Gene McCready and wife, Dana, of Avon, Ohio. Leona was a 1937 graduate of Altoona High School. She was a waitress at the Gable's Department Store restaurant. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church (formerly St. Leo the Great Catholic Church) and the altar and rosary society. She also belonged to the auxiliary of the United Transportation Union and the auxiliary of the Bavarian Aid Society. Leona loved spending time with her family, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at Stanley J. Krish Funeral Home Inc., 1204 17th St., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held at 6 p.m. Friends also will be received from 9:30 to the 10 a.m. funeral Mass Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 825 Williams St., Roaring Spring, Monsignor William E. Shultz officiating. Committal at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
