Simeon was a young man of just 20 years when he enlisted in the Confederate army on March 12, 1862 at Coryell County, TX for the duration of the war. He was a Private in Co. K, 10th Texas Infantry, Nelson's Reg't.

The 10th Infantry was sent to Ft. Hindman, Arkansas Post. In January 1863, the Union attacked to put a stop to the Confederates disrupting traffic on the Mississippi. In a two day battle, the Union took the battle and captured about 3500 Confederate prisoners. Simeon, along with brothers, Asa and John, was one of these prisoners. They were shipped to Camp Douglas, IL. This was a horrific prison camp with shortages of food and a cold that these Southern boys were not accustomed to. The Camp flooded when it rained which allowed disease to flourish - and it did. Many died.

Simeon was paroled at Camp Douglas on Apr. 1 and delivered to City Point, VA on April 7. Upon arrival, he was listed on a roster as "helpless". He died of diphtheria in the General Hospital at Petersburg, VA on April 9, 1863 with his brother at his side. Simeon was just 21 years old. The Pennington family sent 4 sons to war - only two returned home.
