Robert T. McKinney was born in Adams County, the son of Robert T. & Abbey McKinney and became the husband of Mary M. Fitzgerald McKinney. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Mountjoy Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted with his brother John Wesley McKinney in Co. K, 1st Pa Reserves (30th Pa Inf), August 9, 1861. He transferred to Co. A, 190th Pa Inf, on May 31, 1864, when the Pa Reserve Corps ceased to exist and mustered out honorably August 20, 1864. During his service he rose to the rank of corporal and was frequently detailed to the provost guard. He was wounded on August 10, 1862, and hospitalized in York.
