Benjamin Nye Smith married Sarah C. Drake on April 6, 1851 in Gallia County, Ohio. Sarah C. Drake was the daughter of Leonard and Elizabeth "Betsey" (Cleveland) Drake.
Benjamin Nye and Sarah C. (Drake) Smith were pioneers who farmed their homestead near Atalissa. Sarah was a teacher and had school in their home. They were the parents of six children all born on their farm, four girls, then two sons, and all became teachers. The children of Benjamin and Sarah Smith are: Luna born in 1853, married George Washington Coverstone, and lived in Fallon, Nevada; Sarah "Lovisa" born in 1855, married Elwood Parker, and lived in Moscow, Iowa; Mary born in 1858, married John Walters, and lived in Tipton, Iowa; Eugenia V. born in 1860, married Jesse Vanhorn, and lived in Atalissa, Iowa; Leonard Benjamin, born in 1863 and married Mary Augusta James; and Henry C. born in 1868, married Jeanette Needham, and lived in Chico, California.
During the "Gold Rush" years, Ben caught the fever and joined a group going to California. After several years, he returned home broke and disappointed.

BENJAMIN N. SMITH, farmer, Sec. 2; P. O. Atalissa; owns 127 acres of land, valued at $50 per acre; born July 20, 1825, in Meigs Co., Ohio; his parents moved to Gallia Co. in 1827, and afterward to Allen Co., Ind., and thence to Cedar Co. in the spring of 1852; in 1854,came unto his present farm.
Married Miss Sarah Drake, April 16, 1851; she was born in 1828, in Stenton Co., N. Y.;
have six children living---Lena M., Louisa, Mary, Eugenie V., Leonard and Henry; has served his township as Trustee, School Board Director, etc., several years. Republican.

JESSE VANHORN... Benjamin and Sarah (DRAKE ) Smith, the former a native of Ohio and the latter of New York state.
Mr. Smith came to Iowa in 1852 and after spending one year in Cedar county purchased a farm in Muscatine county, which he cultivated until his death, which occurred in 1889, at the age of sixty-three years. His wife died in 1902, at the age of seventy-three years. Their remains lay side by side in Overman cemetery, Goshen township.
By the union of Mr. and Mrs. Smith were born six children, namely : Luna, now thw wife of George Coverston, of California ; Lovisa, now Mrs. J. E. Parker, of Moscow, Iowa ; Mary E., the wife of John Walters, of Tipton, Iowa ; L. B., of Nichols, Iowa ; Eugenia V., now Mrs. Vanhorn ; and Henry C., of Fallon, Nevada.
