Mrs. S. D. Burris
Fatally Burned By
Explosion in Cellar

Mrs. Juanita Burris, 27, wife of S. D. Burris, was fatally burned in a gas explosion at the family home one mile southeast of Davis Sunday about 6:30 p.m.

Entering the cellar to get some fruit, Mrs. Burris struck a match in order to see, and an explosion occurred. Mrs. Burris was blown out of the cellar, enveloped in flames. Her husband, who happened to be near, rushed to her assistance and put out the flames, sustaining burns on his arms and hands.

Wrapping her in blankets, he rushed her to Davis in his car, and she was taken by Bahner ambulance to Wynnewood hospital where she lingered until 4:40 Monday morning. Examination showed that practically her entire body had sustained burns.

The explosion is said to have been caused by a leaking butane line which permitted gas to seep into the cellar.

Services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday at 3 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. Whittington. Burial was in Green Hill cemetery under direction of the Bahners.

Pall bearers were Mavis Hutchens, Elmer Cherry, Jimmy Smith, Harold Oakley, Jack Thomasson and Bob Crawford.

Mrs. Burris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Mabry, was born at Davis, June 21, 1923, and spent all her life in this vicinity. She was employed at Kay's Variety Store while her husband was in the army during World War II. She had a wide acquaintance and host of friends, and her tragic death brought sorrow to the entire community.

Survivors include her husband, a son, Kenny, age 3; four sisters, Mrs. Thelma Smith, Mrs. Marie Anderson, Mrs. Winnie South and Miss Dorothy Mabry, all of Davis, and four brothers, Thomas, Carl and Eugene, all of Davis, and Buddy of Clarkston, Washington.
