The eldest of eight children of Frederick and Henricke Hoffman Steinlicht, after his birth the family moved to Prussia, very near the Polish border, so the entire family spoke both German and Polish. Gustave immigrated to USA in 1878, coming to Anchor, IL. His parents and siblings followed later.

He married Margaret Schlesman (Sleeman) on 18 Jan 1883 in Anchor. They had five daughters and a son.
