Joshua Pennell was born 22 February 1800, probably in Pennsylvania (#2, 3 contra #1). The son of Thomas Pennell, Joshua was orphaned at the age of twelve. He was bound out to a shoemaker and tanner at age fifteen for four years (#1).

In October 1819, Joshua married Elizabeth Sanders (aka Saunders), the daughter of George Sanders and Celia Vickers (#1). Elizabeth was born in Hagerstown, Maryland in October 1798 (#1, 2, 3). From 1819 to 1824, Joshua worked as shoemaker in Lancaster, PA (#1).

From 1824 to 1828, Joshua and Elizabeth lived in Wheeling, Ohio County, Virginia, where Joshua operated a restaurant and a draying business (#1). Joshua Pennell purchased 50 acres of land from Timothy Adams in Ohio County, Virginia in 1825 (#4).

In 1828 Joshua and Elizabeth moved to Perry County, Ohio where Elizabeth's father, George Sanders, was an early settler (#1). Joshua was a farmer for five years and then engaged in mercantile business in Somerset, Ohio for three years. The 1830 census and 1834 and 1836 tax lists put Joshua in Reading Township, Perry, Ohio. Joshua was taxed on land he purchased in Perry County in 1831 (#7).

In 1836 Joshua purchased mortgaged land in Chatham, Licking County and was a merchant for four years (#8, 3). Elizabeth's name appears on the mortgage deed. Joshua returned to farming from 1840-1846, purchasing 83.75 acres in the northwest part of Delaware County in 1842 (#9). The land, located in Range 20, Township 7, Section 4, Lot 13, became part of Prospect Township, Marion County in 1848.

In the late 1840s, Joshua again became a merchant, moving to the village of Denmark, Canaan Township, Morrow County, Ohio (#4) where he purchased property in 1849 and 1853. By 1857 he and Elizabeth were residents of Delaware County, Ohio when they sold their Denmark property (#10).

In 1860 Joshua and Elizabeth lived in Liberty Township, Delaware County, along with their youngest daughter, Elizabeth Susan. Joshua was once again a farmer with $1500 in real estate (#5). The family is listed as number 76 in Liberty Township, near Joshua and Elizabeth's son, William P Pennell, family 73. Another son, Joshua Jr, also lived in Liberty Township, while sons Lewis and James Henry lived about 20 miles north of their parents in Marion and Morrow counties.
Joshua died on 10 October 1864, probably in Liberty Township, Delaware County. He is buried in Waldo, Marion County, Ohio (#11), alongside Elizabeth, who died in 1885 or 1886 (#12).

Joshua and Elizabeth were the parents of eight children who were named in an 1896 biographical sketch of son James Henry Pennell. Three of them were still living at the time of the sketch (#1). Three other children died in infancy.
