Mrs. Thelma Pittman Avant, age 90, of 115 Wedgewood Drive in Sandersville died Tuesday morning September 1, 2009 in the Washington County Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday September 4 in the Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville with the Rev. Dale Andrews and Rev. Marlon Lastinger officiating.
Mrs. Avant was a native of Sumter County, Georgia, the daughter of the late Ross Pittman, Sr. and the late Minnie Beatrice Keith Pittman. She was the wife of the late Alton Hugh Avant. Mrs. Avant was a former school teacher in Sumter County, Schley County and Washington County and was an athletic coach of the Sandersville High School basketball team. She was a retired social services worker with the Washington County Department of Family and Children Services. She had been a member of the Washington County Pilot Club since 1978, and she was a member of the Washington County Historical Society
Survivors are a sister, Betty P. Hodges of Sandersville, nieces and nephews, Mary P. Sawilowsky of Augusta, Terry P. Westbrook of Brunswick, Judith P. Langley, Elaine P. Jones and Paul Allen Pittman all of Alabama, Ann Franklin of Tulsa, OK, Charles Franklin of Saudi Arabia, Charlotte H. Ricks of Nahunta and Lynnah H. Mancil of Virginia.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday evening. The family suggests that donations may be made to the Methodist Children's Home, P. O. Box 2525, Macon, Georgia 31203.
