BURBACH-BOWSER family book: "Elizabeth's husband's father, John Bauser, was born in 1733 on the Atlantic Ocean while his parents were emigrating to this country. They arrived in Annapolis, Md. as other Bowser relatives landed at Philadelphia, Pa. Their name has undergone a change in spelling from the Swiss way of Bauser to Bowser due to English recorders spelling it phonetically. Bowser is the spelling now used. Some times it was also spelled Bouser. John Bauser married Christina Weimer and lived in Hopwell Twp., York Co., Pa. before moving to Somerset Co., In 1773 a John Bowser paid taxes in Bedford Co."
"Bauser is not a Swiss surname. Bauser is "low" German, found in middle Germany. In
Switzerland the "high" German form is "Buser". I'm 99% certain our John "Bauser" origin-
ated as Johannes Buser (pronounced Booser) from the village of Ziefen in Canton Basel,
Switzerland. His age was given as 34 in 1768 when he emigrated without permission that
year, so he would have been born 1733 or 1734. They actually crossed the ocean in 1769 on the ship Minerva where he was listed as "Johannes Busser".
Christina's brother, Heinrich and his family were on the same ship. Her name appears in
Swiss records (Faust & Brumbaugh "Swiss Emigrants....") as "Chrischona Strauman,
sister of Heinrich Strohman or Strauman". "Chrischona" is an early Swiss form of Christina. With John and Christina were four of their children; Anna, bapt. Apr. 18, 1758; Elisabeth, bapt. Sept. 6, 1761; Johannes, bapt. Dec. 25, 1763; Heinrich, bapt. Dec. 27, 1765. These dates coincide with information from the "Bowser Family History". John and Christina's last two children, Peter & Barbara were baptized in York County, PA.
Johannes Buser (John Bauser) settled between Jacobus and Dallastown, York
County, PA. This area was in Shrewsbury Township until 1838 when Springfield
Township was formed.
He was granted a warrant for 50 acres in 1776, the property was surveyed in 1787 at
96.14 Acres and a patent granted October 10, 1789 for 96.14 Acres."
1. John had a farm in Shrewsbury Twp. York Co. Pa.
2. June 6, 1795 John bought 200- acres in Brothers Valley Twp. Bedford Somerset Co. Pa. ( this farm was located in the part of the township which later became Summit Twp.
