Birth: Jul. 8, 1853
Cattaraugus County
New York, USA
Death: May 23, 1938

The community was saddened by the death of Mrs. Frances Bixby because with
her passing long association were severed, she having lived 69 years in Corning.
During that time she has endeared herself to the community, by her life of
patient service, her happy disposition and her strong convictions in the matter
of principles. Mrs. Bixby has been ill for a long time due to complications
relative to old age, and she has been tenderly cared for in the home by her
daughter. She has noticeably failed the past few weeks and passed away quietly
Monday morning at 6 o'clock. She was 84 years, 10 months and 15 days old.
Frances Ida Pierce, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth [sic] Pierce, was
born in Catteragos [sic] County, New York, July 8, 1853. Leaving New York in
early life she spent a short time in Wisconsin eventually arriving in Villisca
and Corning. In Corning she was married to John W. Bixby, September 1, 1881.
From this union four children were born, all of whom still survive. These are:
Mrs. W. D. Suydam of Butte, Montana; Miss Hazel Bixby and John Bixby of Corning;
and Charles R. Bixby of Minatare, Nebr. She is also survived by nine
grandchildren. She is the last of five sisters, all of them preceding her in
death. Her husband died July 21, 1927.
Mrs. Bixby has spent a life of service in the community, her influence
being felt first in the home, for she was distinctly a home person. However her
life was broadened by other activities. She was a member of the Presbyterian
church and as long as health permitted was loyal in her service. She was also
the last surviving charter member of the order of Eastern Star and had hoped
that she might be able to participate in the 50th anniversary which the order
will celebrate. Many honors have been accorded her because of her loyalty to
this organization.
Sixty years of association forms ties which are difficult to break and
though advanced years and physical weakness have prepared loved ones and friends
for the break yet the passing of Mrs. Bixby leaves a void which makes adjustment
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Federated church at
2:30 conducted by the Rev. W.H. Guest and burial was made in Walnut Grove
