Jim married Martha Frances Pickens on February 12, 1879, they lived in Turney, Texas most of their lives. Jim owned and operated a cotton gin near their large two story home, it wasn't unusual for the gin workers to live in their home during the ginning season. Also, Jim was a practicing veterinarian traveling for miles on horseback to treat sick animals.
Jim and Martha had four children: Nora (1883 - 1918) she married Kirby Mills Monkress in 1902, Mertice Whitman (1889 - 1894), Jewell (1896 - 1991) she married Obed Parker Bolton in 1915 and Johnie Dee (1898 - 1905).
