Betty Alice (Gear) Markis, 88, a former resident of Kingston of Perrysburg and West Toledo, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2009, at the Perrysburg Care and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on December 27, 1920, in Toledo to Robert and Freda (Courtad) Gear.

After graduating from Scott High School in 1939, Betty attended the University of Toledo, where she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

She then went to work as a secretary at the DeVilbiss Co. where she met her future husband, Charles Markis. She later worked as catering manager for the Hillcrest Hotel.

Betty and Charley were married on June 15, 1950, and enjoyed 48 wonderful years together before his death in 1998.

She enjoyed working with flowers, and learned many techniques in flower arranging while a member of the Window Box Garden Club. Betty especially loved growing perennials and roses.

A longtime member of Covenant United Presbyterian Church, Betty currently belonged to Christ Presbyterian Church.

The widow of Charles Markis, Betty is survived by her daughters, Peggy (Gerald) Gospodarek of Toledo and Susan (Gerard) Christen of West Chester, OH; granddaughter, Sarah Gospodarek of Toledo and great-granddaughters, Aislynn and Ashley Carman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; brothers, R. William Gear, Jr. and Richard Gear and infant granddaughter, Laura.

Family and friends may visit on Sunday from 3-8 p.m. in the Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114-128 East Alexis Rd. Funeral Services will be held on Monday at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

The family would like to thank the staff at Kingston for their loving care of mom for the last 8 yrs., especially Rose and Robin, and also Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their wonderful care and support.
