After his admission, he was offered a partnership with William H. Seward
at his law practice. The succesful law practice of Seward and Beardsley continued for many years. In 1832, when Seward became brigadier general, Nelson was judge advocate on his staff.
When Mr. Seward's became Governor of NY, Nelson continued to practice law with John Porter.
In 1833, the Cayuga County bank was established and Nelson was one of the original stockholders. In 1837, he took a position with the bank. At this time he withdraw from the law practice.
In 1848, he was one of the incorporators of the Oswego Starch factory, becoming president of it in 1883.
In 1849, he was one of the original trustees of the Auburn Savings Bank, and in 1864 became one of the incorporators of the First National Bank of Auburn.
He was one of the first to invest in the railway system that connected the Mississippi Valley with the Atlantic Coast. He also invested in Western railroads, and became a director of many corporations.
During his time, he was one of the wealthiest men by the name of Beardsley, leaving a fortune worth 7 million dollars upon his death in 1894.
