Serjeant
2nd Battalion, The Rifles, British Army
He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
He and Pte Johnathon Young died while on a routine foot patrol near Sangin in Helmand province. Pte Young was hit by an improvised explosive device and Sjt McAleese went to recover his comrade but was killed by a second bomb.
Aged 29, Sjt McAleese was from Hereford. He joined the army in March 1997, rose quickly through the ranks to platoon serjeant. He previously served in Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Kosovo before deploying to Afghanistan where he was a Sniper Team Commander. "Mac" was respected as a natural leader and outstanding professional soldier. Described as fit and unbelievably tough, he was an excellent boxer and rugby player. He was also remembered for his cheeky grin and great sense of humour.
Sjt McAleese was the son of John McAleese, a retired SAS sergeant who took part in the raid that ended the siege on the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980. Paul is also survived by his wife Joanne and their son Charley, who was born a week before he deployed to Afghanistan, mother Kim Early, sister Hayley McAleese and other family.
The funeral, with full military honours, was held at Hereford Cathedral on September 14, 2009 with over 1,000 mourners in attendance. It was followed by a private service at Hereford Crematorium.
