Second Lt. William "Billy" Walter Miller, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Miller of Stamford, was one of four killed in the crash of a B-24 bomber based at the Courtland army air base, Courtland, Alabama. The accident occurred three miles northwest of the Courtland air force field, according to Commanding Officer Col. Walter W. Gross.
Lt. Miller moved to Stamford in 1923 at the age of three years. He graduated from Stamford High School in 1938 and from Texas A&M University in February 1943.
Immediately following his graduation, he entered the US Army and was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia. He received his commission in the infantry at Fort Benning, and remained there as an instructor for six months. He transferred to the air corps. He trained at Maxwell field, Alabama, Lafayette, Louisiana; Walter Ridge, Alabama; and received his wings at Dothan, Alabama.
He was receiving transition training at Courtland as a first pilot on a B-24 before going overseas.
Survived by his parents; one sister - Mrs. Don Sadler; his grandfather - W.H. Rice.
Services were held at St. John's Methodist Church. At the graveside, a full military presentation was made by the US Army and US Air Force.
