"On 24 Jan, 1816, they left Norwalk, CT, in wagons drawn by ox-teams on a journey to Milan, Ohio, where Stephen had acquired what purported to be a title to half a million acres of the "Sufferers' Lands, south of Lake Erie." They arrived 30 April. From that time to the present, the Lockwood's have been active and conspicuous citizens of Milan and vicinity, as well as northwestern Ohio generally."
