Daniel presumably was born in Hopewell Twp., old Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., where his parents, John and Catharine Blackwell, resided. He married Penelope Van Cleve on 15 Nov. 1806 in Hopewell Twp., and presumably died at his residence in Hopewell Twp.

Daniel typically used the middle initial "J.", probably in reference to his father John, in order to distinguish himself from his first-cousin Daniel, son of Benjamin.
