PEORIA, IL - Hazel Charlotte Marx, 88, of 7023 NE Skyline Drive passed away at 8:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at Apostolic Christian Skylines in Peoria.

Born Dec. 29, 1920, in Peoria to Lester and Bessie (Welty) Brenenstall, she married Merle P. Marx in 1941 in Peoria. He died in April 1987.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Phillip; two sisters, Elizabeth and Roberta; and one infant brother.

Surviving are one daughter, Charlotte M. (Don) Sparks of Peoria; two sons, Adam L. (Margo) Marx of Peoria and Allen L. (Gloria) Marx of Prestonsburg, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Pat Marx of Glasford; one brother, Richard (Bessie) Brenenstall of Elvaston; one sister-in-law, Lois (Willard) Jackson of East Peoria; and several nieces and nephews.

Hazel worked at Zeller Mental Health Center for 17 years. She also worked as a juvenile officer and secretary for 10 years, then at the Peoria County Juvenile Center.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Peoria and a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Peoria for 15 years, where she was a member of the Altar Guild and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

She also made Braille books for the blind.

She was involved with the Cursillio movement retreat and prison ministries for 10 years. She was an election judge for 23 years and was involved with the Friendship House, teaching latch key kids how to use computers.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in Peoria. The Rev. Karl Eckhoff will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Peoria.
