Born William Robert Kirk in Hopkins County, Texas, he was called Willie growing up and Will as an adult. His dad died when he was just a toddler, leaving his mother with 4 children to raise. He was raised by step-father Henry G. Fox and his mother Ophelia, along with brother Jim & sister Donie, sister Grace having died the year following their father. Will also had eight half brothers & sisters, especially close to the young Joe. The family moved to Trinity County, Texas some between 1912 & 1915. Henry Fox taught him to play the fiddle. He loved to perform and often played at area dances in homes and public places. He also loved to dance. He was farmer. He taught his sons to hunt. He became ill and died after a 3-4 wk illness of double pneumonia. He was the father of six children: Avis, Arthur, Clarice, A.D., Nobye Joyce and Loudene.
