Mr. Davis Stockton c.1685 - 1761

Y-DNA and research shows that Davis Stockton's male line ancestors might have first settled in England near the town of Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, in north east England. This is about 40 miles north of the large city of York in County Yorkshire. Y-DNA proves that Davis Stockton's male line ancestors lived in Norway or Sweden over 4,000 years ago. Many Norse / Vikings settled near Stockton-on-Tees and York during the Viking Age (793-1066). The closest Y-DNA match (35/37) to Davis Stockton in all of Europe is from a family that lived 15 miles south of York in 1778.

---------------

Davis Stockton was one of the first settlers in the Ivy Creek and Mechum's River area of what was the Colony of Virginia, British America (now Albemarle County, Virginia). The first mention of Davis Stockton is on a June 10, 1737, deed. Davis Stockton left a large family of children and grandchildren. Davis Stockton is shown as deceased in a January 8, 1762, appraisal of his estate. He appears to have died in 1761.

It is not known exactly when or where Davis Stockton was born, but it appears that he was probably born about 1685 in England. The name Stockton is an English name, and all of his children have English names. None of his children have distinctly Irish or Scottish names.

Y-DNA of descendants of Davis Stockton (I1-M253) prove that his ancestors were from Norway or Sweden (STR cluster I1-BBA and SNP L-22), and I-Y22015, so Norse, and maybe Viking.

The maiden name of Davis Stockton's wife is shown by some researchers as Goudelock, however, there is no evidence that name is correct. Several other possible maiden names have also been put forward including Anthony, Arnold, Morgan, Whiteside, Woods and Wooten, all without any evidence that they are correct. Davis Stockton's wife is sometimes shown as Sarah Anthony Goudelock. That is just a combination of two of her possible maiden names.

Many researchers show the first name of Davis Stockton's wife as Sarah, but that name is presented without proof. The Sarah Stockton shown in property records appears to be a daughter of Davis Stockton, and not the wife of Davis Stockton. Other researchers show the wife of Davis Stockton as Martha, but that name appears to come from a mistake by Rev. Edgar Woods in his 1901 book. Rev. Woods thought that Martha (nee Chapman) Arnold was the widow of Davis Stockton, she was not, she was the widow of Samuel Allen.

It is not known if Davis Stockton of Virginia is related to (north to south):
The Stockton family of Ryton, County Durham, England
The Stockton family of Bishop Wearmouth, County Durham, England
The Stockton family of Bishop Middleton, County Durham, England
----- Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, England
The Stockton family of Stokesley, North Yorkshire, England
~ Stokesley is less than 10 miles south of Stockton-on-Tees.

It appears that Davis Stockton is probably not related to:
The Stockton family of Davenham, County Cheshire, England
The Owen Stockton family (1548-1610) of Malpas, County Cheshire, England

Y-DNA proves Davis Stockton is NOT related to:
Richard Stockton "The Emigrant" (c.1635-1707) of New York and later New Jersey
