Mary Polly Garten was born in Orange County, VA, the daughter of William Garton (born abt 1745 Spotsylvania Co., VA - died 1799, Orange Co., VA) and Mary Polly (Goodall) Garton (born abt 1750 Orange Co., VA - died after 1822 Monroe Co., VA(WV)). Polly (Mary) Garten was married to James Thompson in Monroe Co., VA(WV) on 29 Sep 1801 by Rev. Jacob Cook. In 1823, Mary and James and their 10 children moved from Monroe County, VA (now WV) to Indiana where they purchased land in Rush County. They lived on this land near Milroy for 15 years. Isabella, born in 1824 in Indiana, was their eleventh child and was the only one born in Indiana. All the rest were born in Monroe County, VA (WV). On 18 Nov 1838, Mary's husband, James Thompson died. The probate records (and 1840 census) indicate that Mary may have continued to live on the farm a few more years. Mary married Edmond Dunn, a widower, on 24 Dec 1840. The Fall Term of 1843 Court Records indicate they were divorced but she was still listed as "Mary Dunn" in the 1850 census. The 1860 census showed that Mary then changed her last name back to Thompson. At age 90, Mary, died on 26 Jun 1869 in Rush County, IN and was buried next to her husband, James. The GPS Location of James and Mary Thompson's tombstone: N 39 o 29.871', W 85 o 22.655' 517 ft elevation. Several of Mary and James' children and grandchildren are buried near them.
