COURIER JOURNAL OBITUARY – 02/17/1966
Col. E. Clarke Dawson, 69, retired Graefenburg realtor, died Wednesday [February 16, 1966] at King's Daughters' Hospital, Shelbyville. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Martha McKee Dawson, three daughters, Mrs. Spalding Southall, Willemette, IL, Mrs. Oakley Slucher, Graefenburg, and Mrs. Vincent Biagi, Shelbyville. Funeral, 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Shannon Funeral Home, Shelbyville.

SHELBY SENTINEL OBITUARY – 02/24/1966
Elmer Clarke Dawson, a retired realtor and auctioneer of Graefenburg, died Wednesday [February 16, 1966] afternoon at King’s Daughters Hospital, Shelbyville, shortly after being admitted. Mr. Dawson was born in Shelby County near Southville, April 16, 1896, the son of Welburn & Louise Roberts Dawson. He was a veteran of World War I. He had served as Post Chaplain, and later as Commander of J. Franklin Bell Post #37 American Legion. A prominent Baptist, he had served as a deacon since 1924. Mr. Dawson was treasurer of the Shelby County Baptist Association for 11 years and served as assistant moderator, and moderator of that association, and represented the Graefenburg Baptist Church on the Executive Board for 25 years as Chairman of Finance. His untiring efforts helped bring about the building of the Shelby County Baptist Camp at Dover. Mr. Dawson was a man of strong convictions and was not afraid to stand for what he believed. He was active in all civic and school affairs and worked faithfully on the Citizen’s Committee for Better Schools for Shelby County. He was a Kentucky Colonel, an active Democrat, and served as precinct committeeman of the Graefenburg District, for many years. He was appointed as magistrate of the Clayvillage District by former Governor Bert Combs in 1962. Mr. Dawson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Yates McKee Dawson, 3 daughters, Mrs. Oakley Slucher, Graefenburg, Mrs. Vincent Biagi, Shelbyville, and Mrs. Spalding Southall, Wilmette, IL, one sister, Mrs. Pearl Milton, Bridgeport, KY, one brother W. Roscoe Dawson, Graefenburg, and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 Saturday morning from Shannon’s Funeral Home by Rev. Wayne Ward and Rev. Tom Henry. Burial was in Grove Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville, Kentucky. Nephews serving as pallbearers were Elmer L. Dawson, Alfred Dawson, Rondal Dawson, Curtis Milton, C.C. Fallis Jr., Jimmy Brown and Roy Beasley.
