MARION - The Reverend Dr. Paul O. Batson Jr., 80, died Thursday, September 18, 2003, after an illness. Funeral services will be held at Marion Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 21. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Richardson Funeral Home.
Dr. Batson was born in Greenwood, a son of the late Dr. Paul O. Batson and Eva Lyons Batson. Dr. Batson was a graduate of Furman University and Southern Baptist Seminary and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Furman University in 1981. He was pastor for Little Rock Baptist Church and Fair Bluff Baptist Church before coming to Marion Baptist Church in 1957, from which he retired in 1985.
An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, Dr. Batson served in three theaters of war from 1943-46. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal for actions in Burma, in addition to other decorations.
He served as a trustee at SC Baptist Hospital for 29 years; moderator for the Marion Baptist Association in 1976; trustee at Midwestern Baptist Seminary for 12 years, serving as chairman the last two years of his tenure. He served his community in every way possible.
Surviving are his wife, Mary C. Batson of the home; two sons, Paul O. Batson III and Dr. John Batson, both of Greenville; a daughter, Mary Lynn Batson of Columbia; five brothers, Dr. Lloyd E. Batson of Easley, Rev. Ray Batson of Spartanburg, Rev. Francis Batson of Berea, Ky., Mr. Joel Batson of Heath Springs and Mr. David Batson of Charlotte, NC.
