Benjamin was promoted to First Lieutenant on July 3, 1944.
B-29 #42-24656 was leading a flight of twelve bombers on a mission to bomb the Nakajima Aircraft Factory at Ota near Tokyo. After dropping their bombs they were attacked by Japanese A6M3 fighters. Their engines damaged they crashed into a rice paddy at Kamishiro village near Omigzwa, Chiba Prefecture on December 3, 1944. Eight of the crew were able to bail out before the crash.
Benjamin, who was still on the plane after the crash, was "Killed In Action".
He was awarded the Air Medal & the Purple Heart.
He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on June 1, 1949.

The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldier's were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.
