Matthew was born in St Ninian's Stirling, Scotland to William Meiklejohn and Margaret Caldwell he was one of thirteen children. Matthew was a tailor as was his father, he emigrated to America in 1886 and settled in Los Angeles, where he started his own successful tailor's business. Matthew married 5 times and had 10 children two of them adopted from his fourth wife's first marriage. His funeral service and burial took place in the Wee Kirk o' the Heather, Forest Lawn Glendale
