Son of Nelson B. and Sarah (Howard) Loughry. when he was 13, his family moved to Indiana. In 1859, he located in Monticello. The family originated, owned and operated Loughry Brothers Milling and Grain Company, a company that for over 40 years was one of the most successful of its kind in the county. He fought in the Civil War with Company D, 12th Indiana Infantry. On August 11, 1862, he enlisted and became a recruiter. He served with his company in Vicksburg and Jackson, Mississippi. At the Battle of Mission Ridge, he was wounded and discharged on June 9, 1865. After the war, he studied at a business college in Indianapolis. In 1870, he took the helm at the Monticello mills. In 1873, he married Nancy Turner and they had three children. He was a Mason, member of Libanus Lodge, No. 154 and commander of Post Tippecanoe, No. 51.
