Gaylord B. Thayer, 90, of 73 S. Hanford Ave., WE,(*West Ellicott, Jamestown Chautauqua CO NY) died at 1:10 a.m. Friday (Dec. 26, 2003) in WCA Hospital.
A lifelong area resident, he was born July 10, 1913, in Jamestown,(CHAUTAUQUA CO) NY the son of Bertram M. and Bernice LAMPSON Thayer.
He was a lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, beginning as one of the youngest Eagle Scouts in the country at age 14. He was a member of the same troop as Roger Tory Peterson, with whom he developed a deep respect for nature. He continued as an adult leader for several decades, including his sons' troops, and was ultimately named chairman of the Chadakoin District and awarded the national Silver Beaver Award in 1964. He personified the principles of scouting throughout his life.
He is survived by two sons: Gaylord B. ''Chip'' Thayer Jr. of Wellesley, Mass., and Mark E. Thayer of Woodbridge, Va.; and three grandchildren: Mark E. Jr., Paul B. and Erin L. Thayer, all of Woodbridge.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion B. KLOCK Thayer, whom he married Feb. 22, 1941, and who died April 21, 1995; and two brothers, Eugene E. and Donald L. Thayer.
