Katie Blackmore, Scottish artist, painting in the style of the 'Glasgow Girls' who were resident at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Katie was a friend of my family - close enough that I have several of her pictures handed down to me. Yet I know very little about her. We believe she was born in 1890 but this is not clear. We always thought that she was a relative of R.D. Blackmore, as both lived in Hampton Wick, yet his family came from Berkshire. It seems to be accepted that she died in High Wycombe. Indeed, there has been a Blackmore family in that area. Katie had studios in the West Thames district of London and also painted at Alassio in Italy. Her works range from landscape to figurative. Her agent was Carfax of St James's. At her time, they also handled the work of Gwen John. Katie's exhibits included four R.A. ninety-nine R.B.A. seven S.W.A. and thirty-five Carfax. The works I have include a pastel from her Italian trips but also, and more especially, two works in mixed media on board which are in her own style, which I, as a layman, describe as Symbolist. I believe the works date from the late 1920's.
