John Martin joined the 21st Ohio on September 19, 1861. He was made Lieutenant in Co. F. He was promoted to Captain of Co. I on Feb 29 1864, . He was mustered out August 3, 1865. He served the entire war and was classified as a Veteran Volunteer.

After the war he and his wife, Florence H., had four children. Charles H. Florence H., William C., and John A.

John Martin died at the age of 44 in Findlay, Ohio
