GERTRUDE FENLEY

Gertrude Ellen Bettis, daughter of Lawson and Elizabeth Bettis, was born in Monroe county, Iowa December 15, 1875, and passed from this life at her home in Russell, July 18, 1958, at the age of 82 years.

She grew to young womanhood neat Hiteman, Iowa, and on January 28, 1896 she was married to Stephen H. Fenley. The new home was established on a farm in the Greenville neighborhood. Most of their married life was spent on this farm with the exception of several years, when they lived in Missouri and South Dakota. In 1946 they moved to Russell, where they have since resided.

Nine children were born to this union, James L. and Delbert E., of Bakersfield, Calif.; Leo V., who was killed in an auto accident in 1937; Guy L. of Brant, Mich.; Mrs. Gladys Dandurand of Lead, South Dakota; Stephen H. of Chariton; and Mrs. Florence Dean of Russell. Two babies died in infancy.

She is survived by the sorrowing husband and children; 27 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Roland Bettis of Des Moines and Annis Bettis of Albia; and many other relatives. She was preceded in death by one sister, 3 brothers, and her son, Leo.

Mrs. Fenley had been in failing health for the past two years and had been tenderly cared for in the home. She was of a cheerful disposition, patient and uncomplaining thru the sorrows and burdens of life. She will be greatly missed in the family circle and by her many friends.

Funeral services were held in the Russell Baptist Church Sunday, July 20, at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. A. E. Beals, assisted by Rev. Robert Feltz. Interment was in the Russell Cemetery.
