Barbara Jean McNeil Blackburn, 73, of Leesburg, died Tuesday (July 21, 2009) at her residence after a battle with Alzheimer's and cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charley Blackburn, who died July 28, 2008.
Mrs. Blackburn was born Sunday, May 31, 1936, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Eugene McNeil and Kathryn E. Lambke McNeil. She worked 13 years in the meat department at Bob & Carl's Super Valu in Wilmington. She graduated from Wilmington High School in 1954, where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen. She was an avid bowler, enjoying many tournament trips with friends. She loved to travel, with Gatlinburg being one of her favorite stops. She loved country music and was a member of the Alan Jackson Fan Club, as he was her favorite. She was a loving and doting grandmother.
She is survived by three children, Debbie (Steve) Haines of Jamestown, Kelly (Herb Brown) Anthony of Wilmington, and Brett (Darlene Kelso) Crothers of Kettering; three grandchildren Laci and Ryan Haines and Tyler Price; a stepson, Jerry Blackburn of Los Angeles, Calif.; many friends and relatives; and her loving caregivers, Michelle and James Elam.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at FISHER-EDGINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 97 W. Locust St. at Mulberry Street, Wilmington, Pastor Sandy Santos officiating, with burial in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society or the Community Care Hospice.
