Esther B. Bird, 64, of 1221 W. Columbia Ave., Sunnyside, died in Valley Memorial Hospital in Sunnyside Wednesday. She was born in Pleasanton, Kan., where she spent her early years and received her education. In 1948, she came west to Walla Walla, where she worked at the Veterans Hospital as a licensed practical nurse. In 1960, she moved to Portland and took her nurse's training in the Portland Sanitarium. She received her bachelor of science degree in nursing after graduating with honors with the class of 1960. She then returned to Walla Walla and became director of nurses at Walla Walla General Hospital. In 1968 she moved to Sunnyside and was director of nurses in Sunny Haven Nursing Home. She retired in 1976, and continued to make her home in Sunnyside. Her husband, Hugh Bird, died in 1965. She is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Bird of Sunnyside; three sons, James Manson of Spokane, Donald Manson of Cheney and Jack Manson of Enumclaw; eight grandchildren, Dawn, Michael and Christopher Manson of Cheney; Jeff, Jerry and Janna Manson of Enumclaw, and Jamie and Joseph Manson of Spokane; a sister, Willina James of Toppenish; and a brother, Eldon H. McCormack of Yakima.
