Obituary - Lila Marie Kemp Abel passed away Wednesday April 30th, 2003, due to complications of diabetes. She was born on May 19, 1935, to Edgar Alonzo Kemp and Sarah Jane Tims Kemp, in Garland, Utah.
She grew up in Garland and graduated from Bear River High School. Lila and Fred met in 1953 at Joe's Carr's Auto Sales, where they were both employed. They were married for all Time and Eternity on March 5, 1954 in the Logan Temple. They lived in Brigham, Garland and made our home in Smithfield. They were blessed with seven children, 29 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Lila was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She taught her family the gospel and served faithfully in the auxiliaries of the church. She enjoyed all of her callings. She was a teacher of many, and enjoyed going visiting teaching as well. She loved sports and was a coach, umpire, sports director and of course, a player. Lila was a member of T.O.P.S., Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and PTA. She was also a volunteer at the hospital. She did a variety of handiwork, and loved to pass these skills on to her family, She loved to write poetry and make up little songs. The one that will be remembered most by us is "Giddy Up Joe," which she sang to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, with a unique set of verses for each individual child. She loved plants and flowers and had quite a "green thumb." She loved to collect angels, bells, music boxes and a wide variety of knick-knacks. She loved to go camping with her family and enjoyed being in the mountains.
As time went on she discovered her true passion for drawing and painting. We are all so very proud of her many accomplishments.
Her sense of humor and laughter will be missed greatly.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Agnes Szpunar and the staff of Logan Regional Hospital and Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Their respect and gentle care of her to the very moment of her passing knew no bounds. They were the angels she loved so much.
Lila is survived by her husband Fred; her children Dixie (Jay) Bassett, Smithfield; Christine Abel-Preece, (Christopher Preece), Smithfield; Barbara Rogers, Logan; Rodney Abel, Smithfield; Todd (Kathi) Abel, Logan; Trudi (Jim) Low, Smithfield and Eric (TrinaDee) Abel, Lewiston. Two Indian students: Karolyn and Teddy. Two brothers: Edward Alonzo Kemp and Thomas James Kemp.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Sarah Kemp; four brothers, Dale Leroy Kemp; Oral Joseph Kemp; Elden Ramon Kemp and Norman Val Kemp; two sisters, Elma Theo Fuller and Guennia Syvilla Reynolds; and one grandson, Trevor J. Abel.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 5, at the Smithfield 11th Ward church house with Bishop Alan Webb conducting.
Burial was at the Smithfield Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.
