Birth: 1829, Switzerland
Death: Aug. 2, 1917
Champaign County
Illinois, USA

A June 1863 military census of McLean County, Illinois, indicates that Joesph P. Bartles was age 34 (as of 1 July 1863; thus born 1828-29), and that he was married. A record of his marriage to Verona Zweng (née Reinhard) has not yet been found.

Joseph P. Bartles enlisted on 1 February 1865 as a private for one year of service, and on 10 February mustered in Company A, 150th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. According to his enlistment record, he was a farmer, age 34, a native of Switzerland, and a resident of Hudson, McLean County. He was 5 feet, 5 inches tall, and had brown hair, hazel eyes, and a light complexion. Private Bartles mustered out on 16 January 1866.

Joseph Bartles was naturalized on 3 November 1868 in McLean County. Not found in the 1870 census, Joesph Bartles was enumerated in the 1880 census: a farmer in East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois, with his wife Verona, and step-son Frank Zwang. Verona died in 1890.

Joseph Bartles and Mrs. Kate Wheatley were married on 23 July 1895 in Champaign County. According to the marriage license, he was a son of Conrad and Farona Buchman Bartles; she was a daughter of William and Elizabeth Wills Battershall.

The 1900 census for East Bend Township, Champaign County, shows that Joesph P. Bartles, then a post master, had immigrated to the U.S. in 1855.

The year of death on the headstone is not correct: he died on 2 August 1917 in East Bend Township. (His widow Catharine filed for a pension a week later.)

Amanda Case was a sister of Joseph Bartles' second wife Catherine.
