Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A stock broker and banker before the Civil War, he was elected a Captain in the 17th Iowa Volunteer Infantry at the beginning of that conflict. Within two years, he rose to Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel of his regiment, leading his command in the 1864 Chattanooga campaign and was with Union Major General William T. Sherman on his famous March to the Sea. He particularly distinguished himself at the Battle of Resaca, Georgia on October 12, 1864. When Confederate General John Bell Hood sent a dispatch to Wever asking for the surrender of his position in Resaca, his reply was "In my opinion, I can hold this post. If you want it, come and take it." On February 9, 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers "for gallant and meritorious services during the war." After the war, he resumed his career in banking.
