Old Merchant's Health Fails Suddenly; Expired Early Sunday
BURIAL WEDNESDAY
Isaac C. Swartley, one of North Wales old time merchants, and husband of Ella M. Swartley, died at his home on South Second street, North Wales, early Sunday morning.
Mr. Swartley, who well-advanced in years, had been gradually failing in health, and on Thursday visited his physician. On Friday he was forced to his bed where he later became unconscious, and he remained in this condition until his death. A complete collapse of the nervous and mental faculties was given as the cause of his death.
He was the son of the late Jacob and Catherine Swartley, of Franconia. He was also a brother of the late Jacob Swartley, Lansdale real estate man. He spent his early boyhood days on his parents' home. He learned the trade of shoemaking and after his marriage embarked in the shoe retail business in Lansdale where he opened a store in what is the Fretz Shoe store at the present time. Seven years later Mr. Swartley established a shoe and repair business in the present location in the former Parker building on East Montgomery avenue, North Wales, where he carried on the business for forty years until his death.
Mr. Swartley was one of the several oldest members of the Shiloh lodge of Lansdale. The lodge will conduct services at the funeral; on Wednesday afternoon.
Besides his wife, Mr. Swartley is survived by two children, J. Marvin Swartley, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. William MacIntosh, of Plainfield, N.J.. One brother, the last of six brothers also survives. He is Harry Swartley, of Philadelphia.
