Mary Jane Oates was the second child and oldest daughter of Robert and Sarah Matthews Oates.
Mary J. Oates married William Davison on February 17, 1870, in Henry County, Alabama. The first two Davison children were born in Henry County, Alabama.
Mary and William Davison came to Texas with Mary's family, the Oates Family, in December of 1872. William and Mary Oates Davison remained in Newton, Texas, while Mary's parents, Robert and Sarah Oates settled in Polk County, Texas, in the spring of 1873.
William Davison became involved in the sawmill industry.
At her death in 1920, Mary Oates Davison was survived by her sons, John R. Davison and William E. Davison; four daughters, Ada Davison Wilson, Valma Davison Adams, Mary Alice Davison Hall, and Pearl Davison Peters; her 19 grandchildren; five brothers, Stephen M. Oates, Ephraim E. Oates, Charles S. Oates, William H. Oates, and John C. "Cab" Oates; and seven sisters, Elizabeth Oates Griner, Jane Oates Walding, Margaret Oates Gibson, Sarah Oates Gray, Sinia Oates Peavy, Alabama Carl Oates Kirkland, and Mae Hettie Oates Adams.

Davison; two daughters, Laurinda F. Davison and Evie Davison Booker; two grandchildren; and a brother, James Robert Oates.
