Thomas was the fourth of eight children born to Rev. John Lewis Sr. and Elizabeth (Lewis) Foster. He married Mary (Prather) in 1788 and they had eight children: Elizabeth 'Betsy', Catherine, Ruth, Joseph L. Sarah, Cassandra, John Monroe and Martha.
