Dr. Allen Marston Boyden, former head of the surgery department at the Portland Clinic, died of cancer Friday in his Portland home. He was 84.

He was born Oct. 31, 1908, in Brookings, S.D., and moved to Oregon with his family in 1910. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oregon in 1929. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1932, winning membership in Alpha Omega Alpha and Phi Kappa Phi honorary societies. He served as surgical house officer at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1932 to 1934, then returned to the University of Michigan for three years as an instructor in surgery at University Hospital. He received a Master of Science degree in surgery from the university in 1936.

On Sept. 19, 1936, he married Margery French Davis.

Dr. Boyden was commissioned captain in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served with the 3rd Auxiliary Surgical Group, a unit composed of surgical teams who treated the most severely wounded soldiers in forward areas. He served in the invasion of Sicily and in Normandy within four hours of the D-Day landing. He received a Bronze Star and was discharged in 1945 with the rank of major.

From 1937 to 1942, he was in private practice in Astoria. After his military service, he was in private practice in Portland for two years before joining the surgical division of the Portland Clinic.

Dr. Boyden had been associated with St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center since 1945 and served as the chief of surgery and president of the medical staff. Since his retirement in 1979, he served as the senior lecturer in surgery there until his death. He was also emeritus clinical professor of surgery at the Oregon Health Services University.

Dr. Boyden was the governor for the Oregon chapter of the American College of Surgeons for 12 years and a vice president of the college in 1960-61. He served as president of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, the Western Surgical Association, the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society and vice president of the American Surgical Association. He was also a member of the board of trustees of Catlin Gabel School and the Neskowin Valley School. He published more than 40 scientific articles.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Margery D.; sons Frank Davis of Otis, Allen Moore of Eugene and Bradley Hunt of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Unitarian Church.

Disposition was by cremation.

The family requests that remembrances be contributions to the Allen M. Boyden Memorial Lectureship in care of the St. Vincent Medical Foundation.
