LORA THELMA WALTER 1908-1999.

Lora Thelma Chandler Walter, 91, of Ashland, died Monday, December 23, in Centerville, Tennessee.

Mrs. Walter was born January 31, 1908, in Charley, Kentucky, a daughter of the late John H. and Nora Hayes Chandler. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawson Wadesworth Walter, in 1966.

She was a retired schoolteacher with the Catlettsburg and Boyd County
schools. She began teaching in one-room schoolhouses at Backrun and Candy Run in Scioto County, Ohio, in 1927. She was also a co-author of four books on the family history of the Chandler, Walter, and Hayes families. She was a member of the Beaver Valley United Baptist Church, Kentucky Genealogical Society, Boyd County Education Association and the Boyd County Retired Teacher Association.

Survivors include one daughter, Norida “Nan” Nipp of Ashland; six sons, Lafayette Walter, John Paul Walter, Wendell Jack Walter, and William Grady Walter, all of Ashland, Richard B. Walter of Catlettsburg, and Theodore B. Walter of Lexington; one sister Gladys Blake of Beaver, Ohio; three brothers, Leroy Chandler, Paul W. Chandler and John William Chandler, all of Huntington, West Virginia; 26 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, December 23, at Miller Funeral home, Ashland.

Burial was in Ashland Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers contributions suggested to the Rusty Burke Scholarship Fund, c/o Tim Walter, Buchanan Sound, 1700 Winchester Ave., Ashland, Kentucky 41101.

Miller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
