Joseph Ray Broadbent, 86, passed away January 5, 1996, at the University of Utah Medical Center of causes incident to age.

He was born September 2, 1909 in Heber City, Utah, son of Sylvester and Maggie Josephine Murdock Broadbent. Married Lorna Siddoway of Vernal, Utah, September 11, 1936 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. An active member of the LDS church, Jay served a mission to California from 1929 to 1932. He served in various callings of the church, including the Stake High Council.

He attended public schools in Wasatch County, graduating in 1928 as President of his class. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1934, and pursued the study of law for one year.

After graduating, he moved to California where he was employed by Producers Livestock Marketing Association. There he entered the lamb feeding business in the Imperial Valley, an enterprise in which he was still engaged. Returned to Utah after 20 years so his family could attend college in Utah. At the time of his death, he was engaged in commercial sheep and cattle business in the states of Wyoming, Utah, and California. He was one of the largest producers of sheep and cattle in America.

Active in livestock business, Jay has served as vice president of the National Wool Growers Association; president of the Utah Wool Marketing Association; president of the Utah Wool Growers Association for several terms; president of Imperial Valley Lamb Feeders; Chairman of the Board of Utah Livestock Production Credit Association, 1973 - 1988; director of the American Sheep Producers Council of Denver; benefactor of many livestock organizations nationwide; on the Board of Directors of Uintah Development Company to the present time.

Jay was awarded membership in the "Old Main Society" of Utah State University, and "Friend of the Trail" by the Oregon-California Trails Association.

Survived by his wife, Lorna; two sons, Joseph S. (Carol), Evanston, Wyoming, and Ray S. (Susan), El Centro, California; one daughter, Colleen Broadbent Paddock (Tom), Farmington, Utah; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandsons; two brothers, Benn E. Broadbent, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Dr. Reed Broadbent, Logan, Utah; two sisters, Jayne Malan, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Cora McCarrey, Anchorage, Alaska. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted, Tuesday, January 9, 1996, 12 noon at the Monument Park Ninth Ward Chapel, 1565 Foothill Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends may call at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, Monday evening from 6 to 8 pm, and Tuesday from 10 to 11:30 am at the ward prior to services.

Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

The family extends warmest gratitude to the staffs of the University of Utah Medical Center and St. Joseph's Villa for the kind and helpful service rendered to Mr. Broadbent during the time of his illness.
