A resident of Brass Castle Road, Oxford R. D., he died Wednesday in Warren Hospital.
Mr. Schaare specialized in writing and illustrating children's books, and also was known for his comic book stories, calendar illustrations and illustraions for many pulp magazines.
He studies for four years at the Industrial Art School, New York, and privately under George Shelly. For 30 years he did illustrations for Ring magazine, depicting all the famous boxing personalities of his era. The works were exhibited in the sports section at the New York World's Fair.
He did calendar illustrations for six years for Osborne Calendar Co., Clifton, N.J., and in 1921, seven of his illustrations appeared on magazines covers in one month. He did illustrations for a variety of magazines and businesses.
Mr. Schaare did a series of book illustrations based on a frontier theme, and as a result won a Eugene Field Society Award for outstanding contributions to contemporary literature.
Since retiring to his home, he has done 30 sculpture paintings using a new technique he had developed.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was an Army veteran of World War I.
His wife, the former Evelyn Licitra, died in 1977.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Washington; Oxford Lodge 127, F&AM; Washington Elks Lodge, Washington American Legion Post, and the United Artists and Authors Guild. He was a past exalted ruler of the Boonton, N.J., Elks.
Surviving are six sons, Arthur, Albert and Allen, all of Washington; Christian E. of Holiday, Fla.; Menett of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Robert of Fair Lawn, N.J.; a daughter, Mrs. Darleen Schott, Washington; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
