This was the first bowl game win in the school's history. He attended Arkansas City High School and the University of Texas and Arkansas City Junior College, before his studies were interrupted while he served in the United States Military during World War II. Following the war, Mitchell played at the quarterback position with the University of Oklahoma. He achieved All-American status and was a member of the Sooners' team that won the Sugar Bowl in 1949. He was named MVP of the game. After graduation, he served as assistant coach at Tulsa and Texas Tech and head coach at Wichita State University and Arkansas. During his tenure at the University of Kansas, he coached future College Football Hall of Fame quarterback John Hadl and Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers.
