Entered into rest Monday, March 8, 1926, John Strauss, dearly beloved son of the late David and Carolina Strauss, dear brother of Jake Strauss of Newton, Kan, and the late Max Strauss and David Steinberger of Kansas City, MO. Funeral Wednesday, March 9, at 10 am from the Rindskopf chapel, 5216 Delmar boulevard.
John (Jonas) is in the 1860 census living in NYC with his parents and older brother Jacob. In 1900 he lives in Fort Smith, Arkansas, about 7-8 blocks from his brother Max Strauss and family. About 1905 he moved to St. Louis. He's in the 1920 census living on Taylor Street. The last few years before he died he lived at 1403/5 Olive Street, near the St. Louis Library. His last occupation was an elevator operator at the Rumsey Building. He never married. He died at the Jewish (Fee Fee) Sanatorium.
The challenge has been to find where John lived after his father and mother died. I believe he is living in 1870 with his Aunt Babetta Strauss Lindheimer (Find-a-Grave #140566926) He is listed in the 1870 census as John Lindheimer but not in age order of his cousins. He was also born in New York. There is also a 18 May 1878 Alexandria Gazette article stating that a John Strauss attended a party for his cousin Henrietta Strauss and attended by Hattie & Phil Lindheimer. Sometime after 1878 John moved to Kansas and appears in some newspaper articles there.
