Ralph Oliver Holmes was born in Red Oak, Iowa to Cerelia and George Morris Holmes. He was one of nine children. His family moved a lot when he was a child. Some of the places that they lived were: Dakota territory; Liberty, Kansas; Independence, Kansas; and Kansas City, Missouri. He followed his brother to Oregon and on a trip back to Kansas, he met his future wife, Elva Belle Hester, of rural Jefferson, Kansas. They married in 1901 and moved to Park Place, Oregon. While in Oregon, their first two children were born. Christina and Alvin. They moved back to Kansas in the fall of 1905 where their remaining three children were born in Jefferson, Kansas. He ran a general store and was the postmaster of Jefferson Kansas for several years.

He was a member of the M.E. church. After his wife, Elva, died in 1931 he remarried to, Alice Ritschen, and was preceded in death by her, too.

He died in 1956 and is buried in Fawn Creek cemetery beside his first wife, Elva Belle Hester Holmes.
