Pre-Raphaelite, Illustrator and one of the leading participants of the tempera and fresco revival in England. He began his career as a barrister, reading law at Trinity College Cambridge, and entering the Inner Temple in 1884. Shortly afterwards he enrolled at the Slade School of Art to study painting under Alphonse Legros. He worked as a book illustrator as well as a painter and many of his works illustrate fairy tales. His first exhibition was at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1886, and at the New Gallery. From 1891 and onwards he exhibited at the Royal Academy.
