Sales Leader, Broker, 63, Dies at Home

Andrew Clarence Nelson, 63, head of the Clarence Nelson Brokerage Co., and a well known merchandising authority, died at the family residence, 945-13th East, Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. of coronary occlusion.

Considered one of the west's veteran salesmen, he traveled the intermountain area long before the paved road era. Mr. Nelson had engaged in selling and merchandising since 1906, when he joined the sales force of the J. A. Folger and Sons Co., a San Franciso coffee distributor.

Mr. Nelson, who suffered a heart ailment more than a year ago, returned to his work recently.

TRAVELED EXTENSIVELY

Although his work was his major hobby, Mr. Nelson in recent years had traveled extensively and was planning a leisurely trip throughout the east. In the past three years, he turned much of the company's business over to his son, Paul Clarence Nelson, and his son-in-law and daughter, Jack Davis and Mrs. Mary Lee Nelson Davis.

While always an active businessman, Mr. Nelson also found time for club and public undertakings.

Mr. Nelson was a son of the late Andrew C. Nelson, former state superintendent of public instruction, and Mrs. Amanda Jensen Nelson. Born in Koosharem, Sevier county, June 8, 1886, he attended Manti public school and later the Salt Lake Hamilton elementary and Salt Lake high schools.

SELLING AT 20

When he was 20 years of age, he started his selling career, employed by the Folger company until 1925, when he and Ross Bagley purchased the Maycock Brokerage Co. Four years later, Mr. Nelson purchased the Bagley interests, operating the company himself until 1945, when he was joined by his son, daughter and son-in-law.

Besides his widow, the former Miss Leah Tuttle, Orangeville, Emery county, Mr. Nelson is survived by his son and daughter; two sisters and six brothers: Mrs. Chloe Bailey, Nephi; Mrs. Lucile Bever, J. Clifford, Marion C., Clyde E. and Lloyd C. Nelson, Salt Lake City; C. LaMar Nelson, Los Angeles, and Irving C. Nelson, Oakland, Cal., and one grandchild.

PROGRESS LODGE MEMBER

Mr. Nelson was a member of Progress lodge No. 22, F. and A. M., a 32nd degree Scottish Rite member of Utah consistory and of El Kalah temple, Mystic Shrine. He was affiliated with the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, Alta and Ambassador clubs.

Progress lodge, of which W. J. Ross is worshipful master, will conduct funeral services Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Masonic temple, 650 E. South Temple.

Lincoln G. Kelly, past grand master of the Utah grand lodge and a close family friend, will preside. Burial will be in Salt Lake City cemetery. Friends may call at 36 E. 7th South Thursday and Friday and on Saturday prior to the funeral.
