The son of Dr. Warren and Polly Smith, Nat lost his life at Edisto Beach due to injuries received in a motorcycle accident in March 1975.

Nat was captain of the varsity football team and was voted Mr. Warhawk his senior year at John C. Calhoun Academy (now Colleton Prep). He was a 1974 graduate. The 1976 J.C.C.A. yearbook was dedicated to his and Donald Register's memory.

In addition to his parents, he was survived by brothers: Warren "Skeet" Smith, Jr., and Malcolm "Bugs" Smith and his sisters: Cricket, Julia and Becky Smith.
